La pregunta más importante que hay que hacerse sobre cualquier neobanco es: ¿qué pasa con tu dinero si quiebra? La respuesta depende totalmente de la situación regulatoria del neobanco, y la mayoría de los sitios de comparación ocultan esta información. Nosotros la ponemos en primer lugar.
Los tres niveles regulatorios
Qué significa: El neobanco cuenta con una licencia bancaria completa otorgada por un regulador nacional de la UE/EEE (por ejemplo,BaFin , Banco de Lituania,DNB ). Tus depósitos están protegidos hasta 100 000 € por persona y por entidad en virtud del Sistema de Garantía de Depósitos de la UE (Directiva 2014/49/UE). Si el banco quiebra, se te reembolsará en un plazo de 7 días hábiles.
Qué significa: La entidad está autorizada para emitir dinero electrónico y prestar servicios de pago, pero no cuenta con una licencia bancaria. Sus fondos deben estar protegidos , es decir, separados de los fondos propios de la empresa en una cuenta separada en un banco regulado. Esto ofrece una protección significativa, pero no está cubierto por los sistemas de garantía de depósitos. La recuperación en caso de insolvencia puede llevar meses.
Qué significa: Autorizado para iniciar pagos y retener fondos temporalmente, con requisitos básicos de salvaguarda. Sin garantía de depósitos. Adecuado para flujos de pagos empresariales, pero no para mantener saldos significativos.

¿Cuentan los neobancos con protección de depósitos en Europa?
Algunos sí, otros no. Los neobancos con una licencia bancaria completa de la UE —como Revolut, N26, bunq y Trade Republic— están cubiertos por el Sistema de Garantía de Depósitos (SGD) de la UE hasta un máximo de 100 000 €. Las entidades de dinero electrónico, como Wise, protegen tus fondos separándolos de los activos de la empresa, pero no están cubiertas por el SGD.
¿Qué pasa con mi dinero si un neobanco quiebra?
En el caso de los bancos de la UE con licencia completa, el Sistema Nacional de Garantía de Depósitos garantiza hasta 100 000 € por persona y por entidad, y el pago se efectúa en un plazo de 7 días hábiles. En el caso de las entidades de dinero electrónico, se le deberían devolver sus fondos protegidos, pero el proceso está menos definido y puede tardar más tiempo.
¿Está protegido el depósito de Wise?
No. Wise es una entidad de dinero electrónico, no un banco. Tus fondos están protegidos (se mantienen separados en cuentas segregadas), pero no están cubiertos por el Sistema de Garantía de Depósitos de la UE. Esto significa que no hay una garantía de 100 000 € en caso de insolvencia.
¿Están protegidos los depósitos en Revolut?
Sí. Revolut cuenta con una licencia bancaria completa expedida por el Banco de Lituania (bajo la supervisión del BCE). Los depósitos de los clientes de la UE y del EEE están protegidos hasta 100 000 € por el Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos e Inversiones de Lituania.
